Melissa Dohme couldn’t have known what she was walking into when she arranged to meet up with her high school ex-boyfriend for one last time. The idea was for the 20-year-old to get closure on the relationship, but her ex had different ideas – pulling out a knife and stabbing her 32 times before leaving her by the roadside to die. Indeed, there is every chance she would have died without the help of paramedic Cameron Hill, who was among the first people on the scene.
The 2012 attack saw Melissa flatline four times and slip into a coma as doctors fought to save her life. She was left paralyzed by a stroke she suffered as a result – unable to speak or smile due to her facial nerves being severed in the horrific assault.
However, five years on and Melissa has become Mrs. Dohme Hill after marrying Cameron, as she revealed:
Cameron and Melissa met up a year after the attack and began dating two months later, with the wedding proposal coming at a baseball game in 2015.
Melissa now works as an advocate against domestic violence at Hands Across The bay, and has a strong message to those who may be suffering abuse:
