Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs Pays It Forward By Opening Up Harlem Charter School Alongside Educator, Dr. Steve Perry

We have always big fans of the work that Dr. Steve Perry has done in the education realm (he’s the thought leader behind Capital Preparatory Magnet School in Hartford, Conn.). We know that teaming up with Sean ‘Puffy’ Combs to create the Capital Preparatory Harlem Charter School in New York, will help cultivate future leaders and present them with opportunities that extend beyond the confines of their inner city boroughs.

The school, according to reports, has been five years in the makings, finally opening its doors yesterday (August 29th). “This is the start of something important,” Combs told New York’s ABC affiliate.

Combs stated in a speech to students and reporters:

“Great schools and great education make a big difference,” he said. “Unfortunately, too many people don’t get the opportunity to succeed, no matter how hard they try. This is leveling the playing field here at Capital Prep.”

The school presently has about 176 students in sixth and seventh grades, which were chosen randomly from a pool of 1,000 applicants.  The school looks to have 700 students from grades 6-12 by 2021.

While we have not always been big fans of Combs (mainly for how many of his dealings with some of his past artists has been), he now gets a chance to right some of his wrongs and pay it forward to the community that reared him. We are avid believers in education around here, so we commend anyone changing the lives of our youth. Congrats!
