Dr. Dre Opens Up About Dee Barnes Assault

Dr. Dre has opened up about his 1991 assault on television reporter Dee Barnes. The former NWA rapper has been reticent about the assault but has now spoken up to say it remains a stain on his character.

Speaking in The Defiant Ones, a new 4-part HBO series about the rise of Dre and Jimmy Iovine, the hip-hop producer said:

“Any man that puts his hands on a female is a f*cking idiot. He’s out of his f*cking mind, and I was out of my f*cking mind at the time. I f*cked up, I paid for it, I’m sorry for it, I apologize for it.”

Barnes has previously spoken up about the attack, which saw Dre beat her and try to throw her down a flight of stairs. The assault has followed Dre around throughout his career, despite his success, as he went on:

“I have this dark cloud that follows me, it’s attached to me forever. It’s a major blemish on who I am as a man.”

Of course, Dee Barnes wasn’t the only woman to have suffered at the hands of Dr. Dre. He is also said to have beaten up his one-time girlfriend, the singer Michel’le, who says she was:

“Just a quiet girlfriend who got beat on and told to sit down and shut up.’”
