A Florida man has been charged after a couple from Indiana found a hidden camera in the bedroom of the Airbnb property they were renting from him.
Derek Starnes and his wife told how they found the camera hidden inside a smoke detector that was pointed directly at the bed. Starnes, who works in technology, noticed a pinhole in the detector which alerted him to check for the hidden camera which was recording video onto an SD card.
Starnes called the police who arrested the property’s owner, 56-year-old Wayne Natt, who did not mention the camera on the Airbnb listing.
Natt was charged with video voyeurism by police who also seized, “a lot of computer storage data drives, hard drives, computers, laptops [and] SD cards.” The wifi enabled cameras mean that the video may have been streamed or sent elsewhere.
While hundreds of people may have been filmed without their knowledge, Natt argued that he used the cameras for consenting sex parties where people knew they were being filmed, but would turn them off when guests visited.
Unsurprisingly, police are skeptical – as authorities note:
Natt is currently out on bond, but may face more charges if other victims come forward. Meanwhile, it seems his Airbnb days are over, as the company released a statement, saying:
Only on his own… 🙂
