Beastie Boys Clear Music For Destiny 2 Ad – But Have They Disrespected Adam Yauch?

Gaming fans may have checked out the video game trailer for the newly-released Destiny 2 and been pleased to hear ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys being used as part of the soundtrack on the ad. But has this gone against the wishes of late member, Adam Yauch?

There has pretty much been a blanket ban on the use of songs by the Beastie Boys in adverts since 2012, following the death of Yauch.

The late rapper stated in his will that;

“Notwithstanding anything to the contrary, in no event may my image or name or any music or any artistic property created by me be used for advertising purposes.”

The band have sued companies who used their songs for copyright violation in the past, such as toy company GoldieBox and Monster Energy.

However, sources say that Mike D and Ad-Rock:

“Watched the two-minute mix of cinematic action and winking humor [sic] and gave their blessing.”

While seeming to go against the wishes of their former band-mate, this is not the first time since 2012 that Beastie Boys music has been used for advertising purposes. In 2016, the ‘Star Trek: Beyond’ trailer also used ‘Sabotage.’
