The most dangerous city in the U.S.A. has been announced – and you may be surprised! Far from being the largest city in the nation, it seems that Baltimore has topped the table for this unwanted honor.
An early review of the FBI’s crime report names Baltimore as the deadliest city in America based on it having it’s highest-ever per-capita homicide rate in 2017.
Baltimore experienced 342 homicides in 2017, which is equal to 56 people killed for every 100,000 people living there. This was also a rise of 17% on the previous year’s figures.
For comparison, New Orleans and Detroit both had about 40 killings per 100,000 people. In fact,Baltimore had more murders in total than places like new York City, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
Chicago was the only place to experience more killings than Baltimore in 2017, but it was still less dangerous when worked out per head of population.
However, there could be better news for 2018, as despite continuing issues with gun violence, poverty, unemployment and police corruption, Baltimore has reportedly seen a decline in homicides so far this year. Through to last Sunday (Feb 18), 31 people had been killed, compared with 47 killed during the same period last year—a decline of about 34 percent.
