All Change At ‘Empire’ As Timbaland Replaced As Music Supervisor

Season 3 of ‘Empire’ is set to debut on September 21 and it is all change behind the scenes as Timbaland has been replaced as the show’s music supervisor. Columbia Records decided they wanted to take the music in a different direction, with their A&R Vice President, Shawn Holiday, explaining:

“We were happy to work with Timbaland for the first two seasons, but we wanted to take a different approach for season three.”

Columbia have instead hired Beyoncé producer Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins, who will work with Ester Dean, who has written songs for Katy Perry, Little Mix and Lil Wayne.

Keeping their jobs for the new season were songwriters Ne-Yo and JR Rotem, who will now be joined by Johnta Austin (Usher), Makeba Riddick (Rihanna) and Jesse St John (Britney Spears).

There will also be some new faces in the cast as rapper Xzibit has signed on as well as Romeo Miller (AKA Lil’ Romeo), who will play a rival rapper to Hakeem (Bryshere Gray). Kid Cudi was set to play the rival rapper, but left the show due to creative differences. Also look out for guest appearances from French Montana and Biz Markie!

We’re definitely looking forward to season 3 when it premieres next week – are you? You can check out a quick trailer, below:
