When it comes to losing weight, it helps if you can increase your metabolism and burn off more calories. This may sound like a mammoth task, but by switching your routine around in small ways you can make a big difference to your weight. Try out these 7 easy calories-burning tips to lose weight and get yourself in shape:
1. Move Around
It may sound simple. But just by moving around a bit more you will burn up lots more calories. In fact, research says that people who move about burn one-third more calories than those who are more sedentary. This doesn’t mean that you have to go for a long run (although that may be good too), but rather just keep yourself moving a little throughout the day. In fact, people who move small amounts (fidgeting, tapping their feet, etc) tend to weigh less than those who don’t! Try some of these ideas to get yourself moving:
Tap your feet
Swing your legs
Stand up and stretch
Move your head from side to side
Wriggle and fidget
Pace up and down
Use the restroom upstairs
Park in the furthest corner of the parking lot
Stand up when you’re on the phone and step from side to side
Clench and release your muscles
2. Get Lifting!
If you fancy something more strenuous you can try exercising with weights. Not only will this build muscle tissue which is metabolically active and requires calories even when you are resting, but the act of exercising will help improve your shape too!
3. Eating Little & Often
Rather than blowing out on one or two big meals, try eating smaller meals every 2-4 hours. This will speed up your metabolism compared to eating larger meals less frequently. Your body needs to use energy to digest the food you eat, so by keeping it working, you are actually burning more calories even as you take them in!
4. Eat Some (Healthy) Fat
Eating healthy fats like flaxseed oil, hempseed oil, olive oil, avocados, salmon, tuna, nuts, and seeds will increase your calorie-burning potential. While it may sound odd to say eating fat will help you lose weight, we need fat for our bodies to function correctly too.
Drinking cold water will not only keep you rehydrated – which is good for your skin and your overall health, but it will also help you to burn some calories. Not only will being hydrated allow your metabolism to work properly, the effort of raising the cold water to your body temperature when you drink it will also take extra calories!
6. Get Spicy!
Eating hot spices can speed up your metabolism. If you are not a fan of hot food, perhaps you could try adding half a teaspoon of cinnamon to your morning cup of coffee – which will not only speed up your metabolism but will also help keep your blood sugar levels correct. Whether it is cayenne, wasabi or chillis – getting some spice in your diet will help your metabolism get to work!
7. Eat Protein
Because protein requires a more complex process to break down in your body and be used as fuel, it takes more work to digest. Studies say that 100 calories of protein take up to 30 calories to process – as well as stabilizing blood sugar and taking longer to digest, which means less chance of feeling hungry later in the day! If you can incorporate some protein into each meal you will increase the number of calories you burn each day.
