OMG!

What’s In A Name? The Trouble With Being Called Saddam Hussain!

A marine engineer from Jamshedpur in India is having real trouble finding work, despite ranking as the second best in his class at Tamil Nadu’s Noorul Islam University. While the rest of his university peers have landed jobs, it seems that the problem may be down to this particular former student’s name – Saddam Hussain!

Sharing a name with the infamous Iraqi dictator seems to be at the root of Saddam’s troubles, as he found out after applying for over 40 jobs with international shipping companies. Saddam kept being rejected, so he decided to reach out to HR departments to find out what the problem was…

“I then inquired with the HR departments of the companies and some of them told me my name was the problem. People are scared to hire me.”

In case you didn’t know, Saddam is a pretty popular name with young Indians and, when he was named 25 years ago, it wasn’t imagined that his name would be such a problem for this particular Saddam! Even though his last name is not exactly the same as the former dictator (Hussain rather than Hussein), it seems that it is close enough for companies to be concerned.

Even though his last name is not exactly the same as the former dictator (Hussain rather than Hussein), it seems that it is close enough for companies to be concerned.

An employment consultant explained:

“If the issue involves crossing the borders, then nothing can be done as border patrol and airport authorities are very process-driven and if there is a red flag, they will check out. If the person’s job involves frequent travel abroad, he might just keep getting stuck or the company has to pull him out of the sticky situation, making the hire cumbersome. Even Shah Rukh Khan – the famous Bollywood actor – gets detained at US airports. What is this Saddam in comparison?”

Of course, there is one answer to the problem – could a name change work?

In the end, Saddam decided to change his name to Sajid, but it may have actually made matters worse!

While his passport, voter ID, and driving license all have his new name, Sajid’s educational certificates still show him as Saddam – which raises even more suspicion!

While he battles to have the name on his educational certificates changed, the unemployed Sajid is left with one thought:

“I am an innocent victim of somebody else’s crimes.”

We can’t help but note that a few other names have dropped in popularity too… you don’t get too many ‘Adolfs’ these days either!

But, all joking aside, can someone just give this man a job?
