British Singer M.I.A. Shades Beyoncé, Rihanna, AND Madonna – But Why?

stole

‘Paper Planes’ singer, M.I.A. has thrown shade at Beyoncé, Rihanna, and Madonna by saying that they all stole her sound without giving her acknowledgment. Speaking recently with Q magazine, M.I.A. claimed that the singers stole her ‘swagger’ without offering her anything in return.

The 41-year-old British-born M.I.A., who grew up in Sri Lanka, said:

“I’m fine with Madonna or Beyoncé or Rihanna being ‘inspired’ by my work, but I would like them to then go, ‘Yeah, this immigrant who came out of nowhere influenced us, so maybe not all of them are f**king terrible.”

She went on:

“They don’t even think like that. They go ‘Yeah, maybe me stealing the stuff says she’s all right. She should be thankful we’re stealing it’. But sometimes you just think, ‘F**k, I have to pay some bills,’ you know?’”

However, these weren’t the only words she had for Beyoncé in particular, who M.I.A. claimed had an easy route to fame, saying:

“Beyoncé comes from the school of Michael Jackson-ness. Where the family built an entire world to support you. From when you were a child. I never had that luxury.”

She added:

“I’m just fodder. A template for pop stars to create more content. We constantly feed the top of the pyramid.”

M.I.A. may have been trying to make a point about her own experiences with fame rather than explicitly calling out Bey, Rihanna, or Madonna – as she also tweeted:

We can see where M.I.A. is coming from with her comments about how immigrants and the less-well-off are treated, but we can’t imagine that all fans of Beyoncé, Rihanna, or Madonna will be quite as forgiving!
